Lesson 70 Essay: Literature Genres

(These are old essays from over a year ago that I forgot to publish)

In literature, there are many different kinds of literature including fiction, nonfiction, biographies, and autobiographies.  These groups are then divided into genres.  Genres are not exclusive categories, but instead are labels used to identify what sort of book it is.  Today we will look at historical fiction, realistic fiction, science fiction, and horror.

Historical fiction is among my top favorite genres.  It represents any piece of literature that was written about an actual time period in history.  Historical fiction will contain various degrees of historical facts in the piece of literature.  Sometimes literature is set in a real historical time period, but includes very little or no historical facts.  This is not historical fiction.  G. A. Henty's books are examples of historical fiction.

Realistic fiction is also one of my personal favorites.  This genre is any kind or type of fiction that is an accurate prototype of the world we live in.  In other words, any book that is about something that could actually happen in real life. Genres can overlap, like historical and realistic fiction.    Walter Farley's The Black Stallion series (one of my all-time favorite series) is an example of realistic fiction, as it is about a racehorse.

Science fiction and horror go together, not because of the definition of each, but because the content comes from unusual creativity.  Science fiction uses science and technology, horror uses violence, crime and horror.  They can also overlap and actually be science fiction horror.

Science fiction is a story that is based upon impact of actual, imagined, or potential science, usually set in the future or on another planet.  H. G. Wells and Jules Verne are recognized as early science fiction, or sci-fi, authors.  Since there time, science fiction has rapidly increased in popularity and today is one of the most popular genres.

Horror fiction is fiction in which the events evoke a feeling of dread, fear, or sometimes both in the characters and the reader.  Horror is most commonly thought of in movies, however it still exists in books today.  Similar to the way people read romance novels to experience romantic emotions, horror instills emotions in the reader.
